Victor Hugo, while being an icon of French literature, is an incorrigible romantic with far-fetched takes of glory, sacrifice, ruthlessness, and in general characters whose qualities or flaws are way beyond the realm of the plausible. He also wants to demonstrate his mastery of style by going on multi-page lyrical flourishes that defy the reader's ability to keep track of page-long sentences. At the same time, this book has enormous historical significance as it depicts a society torn between obedience to old and new values, with people bent on subjugating (if they can) and killing (if they must) their opponents, which is surely not far from the reality in France in the year 1793, to which the book owns its title. Even so, the denouement (as well as a parallel episode near the beginning) will leave the reader shaking his head in disbelief, and is in line with Hugo's many other examples of mindless/ruthless chivalry.
In short, this is worth reading but the reader is unlikely to be drawn into the story completely, thanks to these extreme examples that are more reminiscent of the Middle Ages (e.g., the legends of King Arthur) than of 18th century France.

QuatrevingtTreize French Edition Victor Hugo 9781523307449 Books Reviews
The book shipped quickly but it was VERY old and it was an abridged edition. Nowhere said that this wasn't the whole version of the book so i had to buy another copy to get th full book. This was not good
A novel about the French Revolution. More a novel of ideas than of action and character. The opposing ideas are interesting, but the characters lack rounded complexity.
A lot of typo's in this edition. However it is an amazing and incredibly well written story of the French revolution against the royalists.
Although my French is getting rusty, I appreciate the poetry of Victor Hugo's language, and the superb depictions of his characters.
A lire absolument. Ce livre retrace l'ambiance qui se déroulait pendant la révolution Française.
Victor Hugo is a monument who I cannot judge...
I read this many years ago and just re-purchased it. Every American who's heard the french "coward" narrative of the right should read. Few nations have amassed more war glory than the people of France. Often overshadowed by the days of Napoleon or WW1, the events that took place in the battlefields following 1793 changed warfare forever. The enlistment of the people to form a massive popular army that would destroy the small mercenary guards of the monarchies of Europe, and leave stories of democracy to the peasants throughout the continent is one of the most epic stories in humanity.
After the French revolution, the bleeding nation struggled to contain Monarchic insurrections often propped up by outside monarchies, this book renders a beautiful, sophisticated view of an often over-simplified time in French history reduced to a "revolution" or the "dictatorship" of Robespierre.
