On the muddy verge of a shallow little pool the man lay prone and still as still as those poor dead whose broken bodies rested all about him where they had fallen months or days hours or weeks ago in those grim contests which the quick were wont insensately to wage for a few charnel yards of that debatable ground.

The False Faces Louis Joseph Vance 9781492155034 Books Reviews
Louis Joseph Vance wrote fast-paced crime novels in what some call "sensational tabloid style" (`Encyclopedia of Mystery and Detection'). Vance wrote hundreds of short stories and several adventure novels before his best selling mystery novels. The nickname "the lone wolf" added a new expression to our language.
Chapter 1 tells of the escape of Michael Lanyard across "No Man's Land" to the British lines. The description of the background reminds the reader of trench warfare. Lanyard explains his past and his search for his enemy Ekstrom, the Prussian spy. Ekstrom has gone to America and Lanyard will hunt for his revenge. Passengers on a ship have a life boat drill in case of a mine or torpedo. The ship hits stormy seas, good protection against a U-boat. Lanyard wonders if his disguise had been discovered. There is an incident when another passenger's jewelry has been planted in Lanyard's luggage. There is another attack in the dark where Lanyard surprises an unknown man. (Lanyard carries a pistol and morphine without a worry!) Government agents are on board, including the US Secret Service. There is another attack upon Lanyard that night, and he has an incredible adventure at sea.
Lanyard travels to Manhattan and has further adventures. Background descriptions tell about New York in those times. There is a visit to a nightclub and a rapid exit. This nest of spies is not overlooked. There is a final surprise in the last chapters. But there isn't even a hint about the contents of the secret document. From Lincoln to Hoover the US Secret Service was in charge of counter-espionage (as its name implies). The style and language date this to the early 20th century. Aside from that, the basic story could have been used in a novel by Ian Fleming.

thoroughly enjoyed the book
Excellent reading.
Oh, my. What a ride. Don't be put off by the short running time of this. It is a fun listen, halfway between an audio book and a radio play. Inventive, engaging, and often surprising. Had to stifle more than one out-loud laugh at the adventures of "Brenda", a very, very, very old lady just trying to start a B & B, and her overly-friendly next door neighbor, Effie. Excellently produced and presented. Can't wait to hear the next one!
Good
Great fun. Non-stop action from start to finish. Totally unrealistic of course but who cares-not I.
Old-fashioned in the telling, it's a good and suspenseful thriller.
